The I & B Ministry imposed a day’s ban on the popular NDTV channel. The reason behind the ban is that the channel is broadcasting content that endangers National Security during the Pathankot Terror Attack earlier this year in January. The channel’s NDTV ban is on the 9th and 10th November. NDTV will be off the air for these two days.
The opposition party states ‘’this condition is like Emergency.’’ Other parties are opposing the ban on the TV channels. Mr. Venkaiah Naidu who is the Union minister and Information and Broadcasting Minister said that the ban is in the interest of the nation saying, ““The action of asking a TV channel to go off one day is in the Interest of the country’s safety and security.” Subhash Chandra who is Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament tweeted in support of the ban, “The country’s security can not be two opinions. I agree with the government to ban NDTV India”.
Meanwhile, NDTV channel refused that its Hindi channel provided sensitive information during the terror attack and also denied reporting any news which other news channels and newspapers did not report. NDTV said, “After the dark days was fettered, it is extraordinary that NDTV is being processed against in the manner.” The Mumbai Press Club says about the Centre’s ban, “a specific TV channel that has been critical of the government, and has done serious ground reporting on the views of the common man, does not augur well for freedom of expression of the country”
A day after the widespread news, the Information & Broadcasting Ministry decided on banning two more channels (i) News Time Assam & (ii) CareWorld TV. The Information and Broadcasting Ministry imposed the ban on these two TV channels as per Cable TV Networks Regulation Act based on the IMC’s Inter-Ministerial Committee recommendations.
