Fountain, Colorado

Fountain, Colorado

Overview

An All-America City and America’s Millennium City, Fountain’s winning streak is just the beginning. The home rule municipality and city in El Paso County is also a suburb of the bigger Fountain Valley Community. The recent awards given were based on Fountain’s quality of life. The part of the bold, great, and rugged Rocky Mountain Range has a soft spot for residents and tourists. Located at the foothills of Pikes Peak, the city has all the benefits of urban living, yet remains to be a place where people can enjoy both the outdoors and small town feel.

Things to Do

Colorado is teeming with camping sites. Over two-thirds of the state is defined as National Forest land with more than 400 public campgrounds. Most public campgrounds are equipped with water, tables, benches, fire grates, garbage containers, and toilet facilities. Tourists can choose from Fountain’s list of parks. These include Metcalf Park Fountain Creek, Mayors Park, Colorado Springs KOA, and Region Outstanding Natural Area Park. Big game hunting for elk, deer, antelope, bears, mountain lions, and mountain goats is enjoyed throughout the parks. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are permitted on the park’s trails.

When to Visit

“The Blast” is the name of a tremendous train wreck that occurred in the city in 1888. On May 14, 888, a passenger train and a freight train carrying 18 tons of explosives collided, and killed three people. Each July the city commemorates the legendary event with an annual street dance, which is usually hosted by the City Hall Plaza. The Fountain Fall Festival is held each Labor Day weekend. The annual tradition only becomes bigger and better each year. The ceremonies start with a 5-kilometer Run for the Fallen. Festivities include Dance Fund Raisers, Barbeque Dinners, and free breakfasts. Fairgoers visit the festival for the activities, food and craft booths, and live entertainment. Veteran’s Day features parades, live entertainment, and dozens of food, art, and craft stalls. Every Friday evening before Thanksgiving, Fountain celebrates its Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. Every attendee gets a cup of hot chocolate and cookies. Local choirs of the city provide the background music as Santa Claus lights the Caboose and the Holiday Tree.
